Making Divorce as Smooth as Possible

by Norris Law Group on December 6, 2013

MeditatingThe American Psychological Association cites statistics from the National Survey of Family Growth which found that 20% of first marriages end within five years and 48% of marriages don’t survive to twenty years, and offers some suggestions as to how divorcing couples may make the process of divorce as easy as possible.

  1. Try not to think of the breakup as a battle. Divorce mediation may offer a good alternative to going to court. Discussing ongoing problems with a professional, licensed psychologist or therapist may further help divorcing couples come to a resolution while keeping conflict to a minimum.
  2. Proceed with caution when children are involved. According to the APA, it may be helpful for divorcing couples to devise a plan and discuss it with children together. It is also important to maintain communication throughout the process, and children will likely benefit from honest conversations about what the family is going through as a unit.
  3. Take care of yourself. Divorce can be an exhausting, overwhelming experience for all concerned. Stay physically healthy by eating right and getting exercise. Don’t hesitate to surround yourself with a strong “support network” of family and friends. Support groups may also be of assistance. It may help to engage in activities you once enjoyed, but perhaps have ignored for some time, or to find new pastimes.
