10 Things to Keep in Mind During a Divorce: Making DecisionsAll this week, we have taken an in-depth look at 10 things to keep in mind during a divorce, according to Jim Halfens, a divorce specialist and CEO of Divorce Hotel. Yesterday’s blog discussed what your lawyer can and cannot do for you throughout the divorce process. Halfens’ last two suggestions are:

9. “Do not accept decisions without understanding the context.” Even though Halfens strongly suggests “getting the divorce over with,” it is also important to make sure you understand everything that is going on. Feel free to ask your attorney any questions you may have. It is imperative that you fully understand every decision and every agreement made during your divorce procedure. You must literally sign off on everything, and you should know what you’re signing. This is why you hire a divorce attorney, and this is the point at which he or she may be of the most value to you.

10. “Do not act cheap, it’s expensive!” By “cheap,” Halfens means “petty” here. While you are splitting from your ex for good in your divorce, he suggests that you keep in mind that your divorce isthe final collaboration in your relationship before you [part].” You and your ex-spouse actually need each other during the divorce. Do your best to stay away from creating new conflicts, and resist the urge to dredge up old ones. It may be hard to “bite your tongue,” but try. To the extent that you can, get through the divorce with as positive an attitude as possible. You are embarking on a new chapter in your life. It is yours to write as you see fit. But first, you must get your divorce behind you.
